We agree with the author that Facebook is clunky and confusing in terms of storing (instagram or any) photos; however, there are many options outside Flickr for alternative storage. Picasa/Google+, 500px, Zenfolio, your own website, to name a few.

A few years ago, I got a frantic email one evening. It was from a young entrepreneur named Kevin Systrom. “Hey MG, I saw you signed up for Burbn…” is how it started. He was freaked out. Someone had told me about the service and the sign up wasn’t locked down. But Kevin did not want me to write about his fledgling idea just yet. We hopped on the phone. Of course I agreed to hold the story. I’d write when he was ready.

We broke a lot of news at TechCrunch over the years. But I was always happy about the way we treated entrepreneurs with their delicate plans. Big companies are different — they can take hits. Outing young companies before they’re ready: not cool. When in doubt, defer to the entrepreneur. Michael taught us well.

Anyway, while I sat on the story of a hot new HTML5-based location app, I got to know Kevin and eventually his co-founder Mike Krieger. Really great guys. Idealists. Just insane enough to potentially change things. So when I saw the news this morning that Facebook was buying them for a billion dollars, I was beyond happy.

We weren’t investors — sadly, we came into existence too late — but screw that. This is just a great story about a great product, great founders, a great team, and great execution. And I feel sincerely happy for these guys because I was there pretty much the entire time watching from a distance.

Tech: Shoot a Better iPhone Adventure Video With Tips From Camp 4

From National Geographic’s adventure blog, you will find many tips for shooting films on the iPhone 4S interlaced within this interview of the producer of the music video.

We intentionally shot in the evening hours when we knew the light would look beautiful—and as amazing as the new camera on the 4S is, the new software update (iOS5) available on any iPhone really let us play with the camera in ways we couldn’t before. The new iOS lets you lock focus/exposure/and White Balance. That really let us control the look of the footage we were getting.

With this great example later on:

To get the footage to look how we wanted we shot Gillian backlit nearly the entire time. Then we would focus and expose on her guitar or face (which was in the shadow). Because the camera thought it had to expose for the darker area, and we were able to lock that exposure, when we recomposed to include the sun it gives it that great washed out, ephemeral look.

Sorta, but Google so often touts their Galaxy Nexuses [sp?] as a pure Android experience, without any carrier meddling. Only, it’s not “pure” anymore

If memory serves me right only the Nexus One was touted as a carrier-separate experience. I don’t find anything from Google about the Nexus S or the Galaxy Nexus advertising it as anything but “a phone from Google”. The phrases “Pure Google” or “Pure Android” aren’t used by Google, only analysts and bloggers.

To reiterate, this is nitpicking for the sake of nitpicking without casting the same eye toward Apple. Wasn’t the whole goal of the iPhone in the first place to do away with carrier meddling? And, to repeat myself again, when was the last time you tethered your iPhone to your iPad for free/without paying the carrier for the privilege?

I don’t get the comparison to tethering. Google Wallet, or mobile payments generically, is an application allowing the use of a service. Tethering is a hardware/software function allowing you to use your mobile device as a broadband connection for your laptop. Tethering directly substitutes for carrier aircard functionality which you would pay for too, so yeah, carriers are going to have a say about that.

Those upgrading or buying a new iPhone 4S should re-consider the data plans they are buying and ultimately the carrier they choose or else possibly face some ugly overage charges. If you send many txts with iMessage or plan to use Siri, the new voice assistant, make sure your carrier’s data plan (Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint) has room for the data used by these apps in addition to your normal data usage patterns with previous devices.

The new iMessage iOS5 app uses the cellular data connection for transmitting text and media messages to other Apple devices. It does not use traditional SMS and MMS, which means that text plan you’re paying for is unused for iMessage. We don’t have estimates on data used per message yet - text messages are likely very small but photo or video messages could be a factor even if compressed (checking on this). Consider the quantity of messages as a multiplier and as big a factor.

Siri is one of the big features of the iPhone 4S and is receiving raves so far. Siri also uses the data connection to transmit your questions, and Siri’s responses, to and from Apple’s servers. Every time you ask, “Do I need an umbrella tomorrow”, that question and answer uses data against your plan.

We are seeking values on the average data usage of these two new apps for the iPhone 4S. In any case, when buying the iPhone 4S and accompanying data plan it may be wise to think about bumping up to the next tier. Average US smartphone data usage is climbing rapidly. Beyond these two apps, iMessage and Siri, all of the new and great features in iOS 5 will require more data usage as well.

For a comparison of the three carriers, if you use 2GB or more of data usage per month, the obvious choice from a cost perspective becomes the carrier with an unlimited data plan (Sprint). The last thing you want to be on the hook for are those costly overage charges.
