Today, Apple announced the new iPod Touch, 4th generation. Here are the camera specs from Apple's site.
The addition of HD video recording on the rear camera and standard VGA quality for the new front-facing camera is great. With this, Facetime is now enabled and the world of video is brought to the new iPod Touch. However, for taking photo stills with the rear camera, Apple's new iPod Touch disappoints. A max resolution of 960x720 equates to 691,200 pixels, or 0.7 megapixels. Yes, that's a decimal point before the 7. The iPhone 4 has a 5 megapixel camera. Megapixels do not mean everything for quality photos, but that's a huge difference. The quality from 0.7 megapixel photos will be satisfactory for uploading to websites, Facebook, etc but nothing more.
It's apparent that Apple's goal of making the new iPod Touch even thinner left no room for a more robust camera that is up to today's standards. I'd be interested to see the marketing results that indicated to them that users want even thinner devices. I, for one, would have welcomed the same size as today's iPod Touch, or even thicker, to get a higher resolution camera for photos. I believe this move certainly won't help sell more camera and photo editing apps on the iTunes App Store. What were they thinking?

It came as a surprise to everyone tonight when Apple announced that they would be live streaming video of their September media event across the web. The news, however, was somewhat dulled by the fact that Apple announced that the stream will only be viewable on an OS X 10.6 Mac or an iOS device (iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad). The reason for the limitation isn't entirely arbitrary, as Apple is using a new streaming technology called HTTP Live Streaming which was introduced alongside Snow Leopard's QuickTime X and iOS 3.0.While the protocol has been proposed as a standard, so far Apple is one of a few companies who has implemented it. As a result, the video will only be easily viewable on the specified platforms. There seem to be some advantages to the system over existing streaming technologies. Notably, there should be no router/firewall issues as the stream is sent over standard HTTP protocols.
If you're not sure you will be able to view stream, you can try loading this HTTP Live sample stream that Apple has provided.
Apple will host it's annual music event a week from today at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. The even begins at 10:00 a.m. Stay tuned to our site for a liveblog straight from the event.
We're eagerly looking forward to the announcement of hopefully the new iPod Touch with front-facing camera and rear camera. Further wishes include that the rear camera be the same as the 5 megapixel camera in the iPhone 4. We'll stay on top of it.
The Samsung Epic 4G Android Phone is now available on Amazon for pre-order. This is the latest 4G Android phone that has tons of promise. We'll be providing a camera review soon.
Very well done movie-making using the iPhone 4 and the iMovie app.

MacRumors has posted further evidence of the upcoming iPod Touch 4 with front-facing camera. Not a surprise since Apple wants to sell millions of Facetime capable devices but it's always good to see clues of its truth. To be told in September at Apple's next event.
An iPhone parts supplier sent us these photos of what are claimed to be the front LCD and bezel of the upcoming 4th generation iPod Touch. The new part clearly shows a front-sided hole that would leave room for a front-facing FaceTime camera. While we've seen similar parts before, this part is clearly marked as an Apple part "Apple (c) 2010". This stamp is visible in the full resolution image. The part is also stamped with April 29, 2010, indicating that the build date is relatively recent. We've seen other iPod Touch parts circulating in the past. In particular, a back-side camera model reached a late prototype stage last year but was never released.
